Good news for HPE SimpliVity – new platform, new features, and more data protection

Announcing the HPE SimpliVity 325 Gen10 Plus v2, a new AMD-based hyperconverged platform. Stronger data protection features and HPE InfoSight enhancements – including an AI-driven hybrid cloud assessment tool – might just make this HPE SimpliVity platform the most secure HCI on the planet.

HPE SimpliVity-data privacy-blog2.pngData protection is critical to every organization for disaster recovery and business continuity. HPE SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) has provided built-in data protection to our customers for close to a decade, and today the portfolio gets even more secure. HPE is rolling out a compact, powerful AMD-based platform with a plethora of new 4.1.1 software features that I can’t wait to tell you about.

The new HPE SimpliVity 325 Gen10 Plus v2 is based on the latest 3rd generation AMD EPYC 7003 Series processor. This powerful 1U server has an exceptional balance of processor, memory, and I/O at 1P TCO, a perfect solution for edge and VDI use cases. Additionally, this platform includes a higher capacity system offering 33% more storage to customers who need more capacity.

New security and data protection features

Stream the news any day of the week and you’re likely to find a story about the latest IT security breach or cyberattack. In fact, according to CyberSecurity Ventures, ransomware claims a new victim every five seconds, and cybercriminals are increasingly sophisticated. Ransomware can permeate even the most stringent enterprise security systems and quickly spread throughout an organization causing massive disruption to user productivity, business operations, and financial budgets.

HPE SimpliVity provides an excellent platform to run virtual infrastructure and has been proven in real-world use cases to safeguard your data and protect against ransomware. The solution’s built-in data protection and rapid restores within and between clusters enable critical data and applications to get back to their previous state quickly, reducing business disruption and revenue loss.

Now, you can take advantage of additional data protection features and end-to-end ransomware protection through integration with HPE StoreOnce, HPE Cloud Bank Storage, and Zerto, an HPE company. These new HPE SimpliVity 4.1.1 features will be coming soon to the whole portfolio.

HPE StoreOnce data immutability

To halt ransomware attackers from accessing HPE SimpliVity backups on external, air-gapped HPE StoreOnce appliances, another layer of protection has been added with HPE StoreOnce immutability. With this feature, backups can be assigned an immutable period during which they cannot be deleted, thereby, ensuring data security, and enabling reliable data restores even in the event of an attack.

Continuous data protection with Zerto

Customers have long benefitted from the integrated backup technology within and between HPE SimpliVity clusters. Thanks to the recent HPE acquisition of Zerto, an industry leader in cloud data management and protection that can reduce RPOs to mere seconds,, you can set up continuous data protection to and from HPE SimpliVity federations while also leveraging Zerto for data migrations.

Cloud data protection with HPE Cloud Bank Storage

For customers who prefer a hybrid cloud data protection strategy, HPE SimpliVity 4.1.1 delivers the industry’s most complete and automated HCI solution offering with HPE SimpliVity with HPE Cloud Bank Storage. This combined solution delivers secure, cost-effective VM backup to low-cost object storage either on-premises or in the public cloud. It also meets long-term data retention or compliance requirements. The solution reduces complexity, cost, and risk by efficiently replicating apps and data from HPE SimpliVity directly to cloud.

When it comes to restores, now HPE StoreOnce can restore data 30% faster* and more efficiently (especially useful if over WAN) than before, because data is fully optimized, deduped and compressed prior to sending back to HPE SimpliVity.  Current supported cloud providers include AWS, Azure, and Scality.

Security for the entire stack

Recently, HPE SimpliVity was named a Best of VMworld 2021 Finalist in the Security, Networking and Edge category, and for good reason. From a security standpoint, HPE SimpliVity protects the entire infrastructure stack, including security for hardware, software, networking, hypervisor, and more.

Now, with this latest software release, HPE SimpliVity also supports Transport Layer Security (TLS).  Intended for security conscious customers who need data secured when transferring over a network, TLS is a protocol that provides data encryption, authentication, and integrity – for that extra measure of assurance.

For customers using NSX-T, we now support virtual or digital switches, providing improved network security and traffic isolation to applications running on VMs, containers, or ESXi hypervisors.

New container and AI features

In other news benefitting the entire portfolio, let’s talk about container advancements, HPE InfoSight enhancements, and a new AI-driven hybrid cloud assessment tool.

Containers CSI support

For organizations looking to modernize applications and speed up development cycles with a container-based architecture, HPE SimpliVity supports the Container Storage Interface (CSI) Driver for Kubernetes.CSI and persistent volume support enable both VMs and container workloads to be run on the same HPE SimpliVity platform at edge sites, which eliminates the need for dedicated infrastructure of each workload. It’s an ideal platform for customers who want a simplified management and differentiated data protection experience that enhances cloud native applications deployed on containers.

The new HPE SimpliVity CSI plugin 2.0 allows persistent volumes to be extended using a feature called Offline Volume Expansion. HPE SimpliVity has been tested with VMware Tanzu, RedHat OpenShift, Rancher, and Google Anthos. These cloud-based Kubernetes container platforms offer consistent security, built-in monitoring, centralized policy management, and compatibility with Kubernetes container workloads. They also offer fast, self-service provisioning, and allow developers to create, test, and deploy applications in the cloud with no vendor lock-in.

Enhanced HPE InfoSight features

For an enhanced support experience, 54% of HPE SimpliVity deployments, including Pitt Ohio, have adopted HPE InfoSight for predictive analytics and infrastructure troubleshooting. (Read about Pitt Ohio and nearly two dozen more HPE SimpliVity customers in our Intelligent HCI Customer Success eBook.)

Right now, we use [HPE InfoSight] for asset tracking and predictive intelligence, says Dave Wundereley, Director EIOS, PITT OHIO. "It tells us that a drive may soon fail, or that we’re nearing storage capacity.

HPE InfoSight—which collects information from HPE’s massive installed base to automatically remediate infrastructure issues—has 1,250 trillion data points in a data lake that has been built up over more than a decade.

Our team is continually enhancing HPE InfoSight for HPE SimpliVity, and I’m happy to announce the following new features:

  • Streaming Wellness – With Streaming Wellness customers can see issues and resolutions regarding their HPE SimpliVity hosts including hardware, software, and any external errors on the HPE InfoSight portal. Once alerted through the HPE InfoSight ‘call home’ feature, customers can take corrective actions based on suggested recommendations on the portal.  For common issues, cases may automatically be created for quick resolution.
  • 5-Minute Heartbeat – Through the HPE Infosight portal, HPE SimpliVity nodes send home data every five minutes. This “5-minute heartbeat” lets you see minimal node details immediately upon registering. Storage drive issues are visible in near real-time on the portal, helping to identify registration and connectivity issues quickly.

HPE CloudPhysics assessment tool

To complement HPE InfoSight, HPE has added a breakthrough AI-driven hybrid cloud assessment tool to its arsenal with a new SaaS HPE CloudPhysics platform. HPE CloudPhysics data lake—which includes more than 200 trillion data samples from more than 1 million virtual machines—provides an excellent predictive tool to assess your environment, when teamed with HPE’s InfoSight AI-driven predictive analytics data engine.

Our current data lakes work for the HPE installed base, but HPE CloudPhysics can go in and assess any enterprise IT environment, on-premises and in the cloud. In just minutes, the tool can analyze your HPE SimpliVity environment, providing quick return on investment recommendations for cloud migrations, application modernization, and infrastructure sizing.

HPE CloudPhysics can help you get to an IT solution faster, because you spend less time in discovery mode analyzing your current infrastructure.
