The Importance of Reliable Power

The Internet of Things (IoT) means an increasingly-connected world. Smart businesses and cities depend on many devices and sensors to inform decisions and create a safe environment. As the number of connected devices grows, the need for an accessible and reliable power supply is becoming more and more crucial.

Our Power over Ethernet (PoE) switches already make power accessible, with the ability to both connect and power devices via a single Ethernet cable. But what happens when the switch is rebooted? Interrupting the operation of a switch for re-configuration, provisioning or firmware upgrades, for example, used to mean that the switch would stop powering its connected devices too. Cameras, sensors, monitors—anything relying on the switch would be shut down.

That’s why we came up with Continuous PoE (CPoE). It’s a unique feature that guarantees uninterrupted power delivery to cameras and other sensors, even when the switch is rebooted. CPoE lets switches perform actions such as software upgrades without forcing connected PoE devices to power cycle. This means, for example, if you are rebooting a switch connected to an IP camera, CPoE will maintain power to the camera so that it can buffer the video footage while the switch reboots, so no data is lost.

Need to Apply an Urgent Maintenance Patch?

No problem. You can now upgrade or reconfigure your network any time, without worrying about power loss causing video outages or the need to reconfigure camera settings. Cameras that support local storage simply resync to the network once the link is restored.

Ensure the continuity of your valuable data, and stop worrying about your connected devices. Allied Telesis Continuous PoE is available on a number of our Industrial and xSeries switches as part of our industry-leading feature set.
